THE CHARM OF SOCIETY HILL
Brimming with quaint colonial architecture and rich with history, Society Hill is one of Philadelphia’s oldest residential neighborhoods. Cobblestone streets are dotted with Franklin lamps and lined with brick sidewalks that lead to Federalist and Georgian style row houses.
Named after the Free Society of Traders, Society Hill borders the Delaware River just south of Old City and Independence Hall, extending from Chestnut Street to South Street and westward to 7th Street. Dock Street’s unusual arc shape can be attributed to its former life as Dock Creek connecting out to the river.
After decades of neglect, Society Hill was restored to its former splendor thanks to one of the first city, state, and federal urban renewal programs designed to preserve historic buildings. Society Hill is now listed on both the National and Philadelphia Registers of Historic Places.
Local transit options include the Market–Frankford subway line stops at 2nd and 5th Streets, multiple public bus routes, bikeshare and paths, as well as connecting greenways.

CARE FOR A DRINK?
Pennsylvania was the birthplace of American whiskey, when 17th century eastern European farmers settled here and planted their rye seeds in the rocky soil. The Ryland name is inspired by the golden yellow stretches of land upon which their rye was grown.
The Ryland cocktail offers up a fresh take on a classic Manhattan with a Society Hill twist:
2oz. Kinsey Rye Whiskey
1oz Dolin Sweet Vermouth
20 drops Dram Palo Santo Bitters
10 drops Artemisia Smoked Cherry Bitters
5 drops Bittercube Orange Bitters
1. Combine whiskey, vermouth, and bitters in a cocktail mixing glass.
2. Add ice and stir until chilled.
3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with cherry.
